A silver color metal and enamel device 1 3/16 inches (3.02 cm) in width overall consisting of a silver circular textured background supporting a silver caduceus surmounted by a red (scarlet) Greek cross bearing a green Greek cross charged with a silver fleam between four silver stars, all enclosed by a red (maroon) circular scroll inscribed "CARE COMPASSION CONCERN" in silver letters.
The four stars symbolize the unit's battle honors in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe, World War II. The Meritorious Unit Commendation streamer embroidered European Theater is represented by the red (scarlet) border. The fleam, an ancient surgeon's lancet, on a green background, simulates the numerical designation of the Field Hospital. The caduceus and the red cross are symbols of hospital units, while silver and maroon are colors used by the Army Medical Department.
The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 23 September 1969.
